This video shows a real breakthrough in the harvesting of fiber hemp stalks. The main goal was to obtain parallel swaths similar to the mainstream harvesting method for flax stalks. In the end a further processing of the hemp has now become possible on existing flax processing machines. This revolutionary method opens a whole new world of possibilities to turn hemp fibers into fabrics and textiles. The footage was shot in the summer of 2021 in France on the fields of La Chanvrière (Aube dept.). One of Europe’s leading hemp growing and processing companies. These were the first trial runs on their 2021 crop using this specific harvesting method and machinery. The first step shows the cutting operation. Later, the second machine, which is a standard flax turner, picks up the swaths and turns them over. This is done to obtain an evenly spread (dew-)retting of the stalks. Finally, when the time was right, the self-propelled flax baler winds up the hemp stalks in bales and prepares them for future entry in a flax scutching line.
