B-LOU-msday: 2 Nestor - a chapter synopsis in under 10m

Part one of a series of short synopses of the Chapters of Ulysses, with some odds and ends that occur to me thinking on the chapter. If you can afford it, please do support this, and my other on- and off- line projects at   / martinfrenchtheatre   - sign up by the end of June 2020, and I will record something for your answerphone or personal enjoyment. My professional FB page is to be found here -   / martinfrenchtheatre   (mostly) TEXT OF THE VIDEO EPISODE 2. Nestor TIME – 10am (though in reality, it starts about 9.50) SCENE – School – Clifton School at Summerfield House in Dalkey (Joyce worked here Mar-Jun 1904) COLOUR – Brown TECHNIQUE – Catechism (personal) CORRESPONDENCES – Stephen – Telemachus Deacy – Nestor Sargent – Pisistratus Mrs. O’Shea – Helen SCIENCE / ART - History MEANING – Wisdom of the Old World ORGAN - None SYMBOLS – Horse, Ulster, woman, Common Sense OTHER CHARACTERS – the other schoolboys PLOT – — You, Cochrane, what city sent for him? — Tarentum, sir. — Very good. Well? — There was a battle, sir. — Very good. Where? The boy's blank face asked the blank window.: Dedalus is teaching a history lesson in school, but he is no teacher, and laments to himself how he gets so far before he loses them – this time his poetic idealisation pushes past the casual taking of the name Pyrrhus for the word Pier. With hockey coming at 10, they are all pretty much distracted, and ask him for a ghost story. When they break, Cyril Sargent stays back for help with his sums before joining the rest. Thursday being payday, Dedalus proceeds to find Deacy, the headmaster, looking for his wages. Deacy is more interested in complaining about everything, and wants Dedalus to use his connections with the paper to get an article he has written published about Irish cattle and horses, and the foot and mouth disease . Deacy lashes out at the problems he sees in the world, continuing on to the sins of women. Dedalus leaves, considering that Mulligan’s next nickname for him will be the Bullock Befriending Bard ODDS & ENDS We have the second appearance of anti-semitism in the novel – Joyce was fiercely against bigotry, and the lead character of the novel Leopold Bloom is Jewish: the anti-semitism he suffers daily is a key problem Joyce identifies. Where previously, Haines was an English anti-semite, we now see an Irish one in the Headmaster, Deacy. Both certainly see themselves as literate educated men. By introducing it earlier, Joyce gives an Irish audience an easy in, to see that the Englishman as a villain, before turning the lens on ourselves. Mark My words… Deacy here starts with Anti-semitism, and adds it to misogyny, nationalism and religiosity, all bad things in Joyce’s book. Dedalus is stuck in a power dynamic that doesn’t clearly permit him to freely disagree with his boss, though already his lack of enthusiasm for Deacy’s guff seems to mark him out in Deacy’s eyes I forsee, Mr Deacy said… Deacy is supposedly Nestor, but in truth, this is a juxtaposition rather than any sense of honoring him.
