The Museo ng Kaalamáng Katutubò presents Awit, Kumintang at Kundiman by Elena Rivera Mirano, Ph.D. The kundiman has often been referred to as the Philippine national song. Moderate in tempo, full of emotion, the kundiman expresses the deepest desires and aspirations of Filipinos. First observed at the turn of the 19th century, the kundiman form is a product of the processes of assimilation and consolidation that were responses of conquered populations to the onslaught of the colonizing culture. The paper looks back at 18th and 19th century Tagalog traditional song forms such as the awit and the kumintang in an attempt to understand the rise of this form in the latter part of the 19th century in anticipation of its dominance as the quintessential Tagalog form in the 20th century.
