Stavit A. Shalev, MD, Spoke about Genetic counselors and ethical dilemmas, in a Workshop on Genomics, Public Domain, and Policy, Bioethics, and Law Center (in progress), Nursing Department, Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, May 12, 2019. Abstract: Genetic counseling is the medical process in which genetic data is delivered to individuals and families and discussed with them, usually leading to personal and medical informed decisions. Since the genetic data is unique in the personal context, these personal decisions are influenced by cultural, moral and religious views, and occasionally involve sensitive personal and familial ramification. As a consequence, the genetic counselors encounter situations in which significant ethical dilemmas should be addressed and carefully handled. The talk will review examples of typical topics, including ethical dilemmas in prenatal genetic diagnosis, pre-symptomatic genetic diagnosis, population screening tests, testing children, and issues related to advanced high through-put genetic tests.
