Located in the beautiful Khullu Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan, Thoksi Khar is a 600-700 year old historical site, perched on a rocky peak at an altitude of about 9,000 feet. This place was once the main seat of the Yabgu dynasty, the ruling family of Khullu, and was used as a defensive fort. This mountain fort is also known as the “Castle of the Summit” or “Upper Fort”. Due to its highest position, it was the best place to keep an eye on enemy movements. According to tradition, the mosque here is attributed to the great Sufi saint Amir Kabir Syed Ali Hamadani in the 13th or 14th century, who played an important role in the propagation of Islam in Baltistan. The fort was severely damaged after the Dogra attacks in the 1840s, after which the royal family abandoned the mountaintop and built a new palace in the valley, which is today known as “Khullu Mahal”. Today, Thoksi Khar is a historical ruin, a spiritual place and a famous hiking destination, from where one can see a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire Khuvlu Valley.
