Osteoarthritis is when the normal smooth cartilage in your hip joint wears away, resulting in bare bone rubbing on bare bone. Patients will typically know they've got arthritis if they have a deep seated ache in the hip often described as feeling like toothache. Hip arthritis can initially be treated with physiotherapy, painkillers and injections, but ultimately once the pain gets too much, hip replacement surgery is the only remaining option. What is the difference between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis? Osteoarthritis will affect one or two joints in the body in isolation, whereas rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune and inflammatory condition that affects the whole of your body and multiple joints at one time, it’s not treated in the same way as osteoarthritis. What is hip bursitis? Hip bursitis is typically caused by inflammation of the bursa over the side of your hip, bursitis typically comes on spontaneously and causes pain especially on lying on the side that’s inflamed. Bursitis is often confused with tendonitis, although there's similar symptoms, the treatments are very different. Bursitis is treated similarly to arthritis, including physiotherapy, painkillers and a sterile injection, surgery isn’t an option. What is hip impingement? Hip impingement is a condition in younger patients caused by deformities in the ball and socket of your hip joint, causing damage to the cartilage. Symptoms of hip impingement are a sharp, catching, stabbing pain, in the front or back of the joint, it feels like a red hot poker going straight through the joint. Hip impingement is treated with physiotherapy and painkillers and sometimes with keyhole surgery. What is a hip injury? Hip injuries are actually incredibly rare, especially when compared to the knee. If a patient does fall over and hurt themselves or damage their hip, it's often a fracture or something serious that would need emergency treatment. Hip fractures are treated very differently to those other chronic conditions discussed in the video. Mr Simon Garrett is a consultant orthopaedic hip and knee surgeon. He practises at the Winterbourne Hospital in Dorchester https://www.circlehealthgroup.co.uk/c... If you have any of the symptoms outlined in this video, seek professional medical help immediately.
