Jerry Brudos: Salem, Oregon’s Shoe Fetish Serial Killer

In the tormented existence of serial killer Jerry Brudos, his fetish for women’s shoes began at the age of five. His mother had wanted a daughter and resented him. His teen years were fueled by hatred towards women and a desire for revenge against his mother. He was institutionalized and often conducted night prowling raids to steal shoes and undergarments. His first murder victim he abducted on the upper level parking structure at Salem’s Meier and Frank Department Store. He would kill four women viciously frequently slowly torturing them before in his home garage. His family was forbidden to enter the structure. When he was captured by police in 1969 and pled guilty, his wife was put on trial as an accessory. She was found not guilty and later vanished form the region. While incarcerated, Brudos contacted shoe distributors requesting their most recent catalogs. He died in March 2006 having served 37 years in jail.
