Turns out, the road for its history is just as curvy as its toe. Though there is clearly a similarity between the modern icon and the late 17th century fashionable shoe, that may be entirely a coincidence. Up until the 1900s, witches were depicted in bare feet, flat common shoes, or occasionally a modern style poked in. No pointed toes, curvy heels, buckles, or giant tongues to be seen. That is, until that style of shoe was trendy again. The 1890s brought back the pointed toe, and high heels were not far behind. In fact, the entire 1900-1930 range was rather enamored with 18th century style things from panniers to buckled shoes. But they didn't have a decade in mind, just a vague style. Turns out, this happy accident may have brought us a strangely accurate shoe!
