He casts the Piano Concerto No.2 in four movements rather than the traditional three, adding a dramatic 2nd movt scherzo. Brahms delights in devising imaginative interactions between the soloist and orchestra. The main theme was introduced by the solo horn and traded back and forth with the pianist. Almost immediately, the pianist launches into a solo cadenza at the beginning.
