Several Indian opposition leaders were detained on Monday after taking part in a protest march in Delhi. The march, which was to protest against the alleged manipulation of voter lists, began at the parliament building and was supposed to conclude at the office of India’s Election Commission. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was among the people detained. Though the Election Commission had allowed for a meeting with 30 people, the protesters did not have permission for a gathering of this size, a police official told ANI news service. Over the past week, Mr Gandhi and others have made a series of allegations of ‘vote theft’ against the Election Commission. The latter has denied these, calling Mr Gandhi’s claims 'false and misleading'. Monday’s incident comes amid a wider debate about the Special Intensive Revision or SIR, under which the Election Commission released an updated draft of electoral rolls for Bihar state, where key elections are scheduled for November. Opposition parties and election charities say the exercise was rushed through - and many voters in Bihar have told the BBC that the draft rolls have wrong photos and include dead people. #rahulgandhi #sir #sirbihar #electioncommissionindia #electioncommission #oppositionleaders #rahulgandhidetained #mahuamoitra #oppositionprotest #oppositionmembersdetained Click here to subscribe to our channel 👉🏽 https://bbc.in/3whmDp3 ----------------------------------- This is the official BBC News India channel.
