Children are different from adults. They can't always tell what exactly is bothering them and cannot answer each medical question. That's when a pediatric neurosurgeon comes into play. They are trained in diagnosing and treating neurological disorders among children. Pediatric neurosurgery is a specialized branch of surgery that deals with diseases of the spine, brain, and nervous system in children. Common conditions that come under pediatric neurosurgery are: Brain and spinal cord tumors are the 2nd most frequently diagnosed cancer among children, after leukemia. It is a disease marked by abnormal cell growth in the brain and spinal cord tissues. Craniosynostosis: A newborn's skull has numerous plates of soft bone, which eventually fuses as they grow. Craniosynostosis is a condition in which the fusion occurs too soon. It creates pressure on the developing brain and affects the baby's eyesight and appearance. Neural tube defects are congenital disabilities of the brain, spine, or spinal cord that happen in the first month of pregnancy. Examples of neural tube defects are myelomeningocele, spina bifida, tethered spinal cord, and meningocele. Cerebral palsy is another congenital disorder affecting the newborn's movement, hearing, learning, posture, thinking, and seeing. Hydrocephalus is a neurological condition in which excessive cerebrospinal fluid builds up in open areas of the brain. If left untreated, hydrocephalus can permanently damage the brain. Advances in surgical techniques have resulted in newer, low-risk neurosurgical procedures that are less invasive. Some of the standard procedures done to treat neurological disorders in children are: Brachial Plexus and Peripheral Nerve Reconstruction: Surgery to reconstruct or repair damaged or injured peripheral nerves. Deep Brain Stimulation: DBS involves placing a brain pacemaker to send electrical impulses to specific parts of the brain. Radiosurgery: A form of radiation therapy in which large doses of radiation are precisely targeted to the tumor. Shunt Placement: A shunt is connected to a catheter to divert excess cerebrospinal fluid to other body parts for absorption. Tumor Embolization: Minimally invasive procedure to reduce/block blood flow to the tumor. About Treatment - https://www.vaidam.com/search/pediatr...
