Long before the Second World War, Hitler tried to take control of Germany in a failed revolution. The Munich Putsch saw Hitler and his group of Nazi Brownshirts marched to the Burgerbraukeller to demand control of the city of Munich and the government. He called for the overthrow of the Weimar Republic and dreamed of being installed as the President of Germany. The Beer Hall Putsch ultimately failed and it resulted in a bloody shootout with state police, and the arrest of Hitler and a number of his high ranking Nazi friends. When brought on trial, Hitler was accused of high treason a crime which would have normally lead to execution. Throughout history many people have lost their head for treason but the judges who presided over Hitler's trial were very sympathetic and pro-Nazi. Because of this he was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment when he probably should have been sentenced to death. Inside of Landsberg Prison he would stay only 8 months living in great comfort and luxury, but after his imprisonment he gained the celebrity status and notoriety he greatly craved. But the judges who gave the verdict in his trial ultimately had the chance to end Hitler's life, and had the chance to end the Nazi Party, but they didn't take this. If they had been harsher with his sentence then it's likely that the Second World War and the Rise of the Nazis would never have happened.
