A collection of indigenous peoples from the Klamath Mountains in California and Oregon in the northwest of the United States that share a common language are known as the Shastan peoples. They have historically occupied parts of the Klamath, Salmon, Sacramento, and McCloud rivers, among other area waterways. Parts of Jackson, Klamath, and Siskiyou counties are now Shastan lands. Although there have been arguments in support of more or fewer languages, scholars have typically categorized the Shastan peoples into four languages. Shasta proper speakers, including the Kahosadi, Konomihu, Okwanuchu, and Tlohomtah’hoi "New River" Shasta, lived in communities that were usually close to a water source. There were sometimes just one or two families in their communities.
