A song for the "Strange" theme on the Seasons of the Ukulele. This one is part of my "true confessions" series. These are songs that tell true stories of my life and the lessons I (may) have learned from them. This one details my visit as a young man to the US (then under Jimmy Carter) and the disillusion I had with my American Dream. LYRICS & CHORDS INTRO: (Bb) (C) (Dm) x2 (Dm) I visited my American aunt in Chi(Bb)cago in (C) '78 (Dm) Despite the age difference I (C) thought that we'd re(Dm)late Unlike her family in England, she was (C) fun and not so (Dm) strict She toured me around the city and I (Bb) thought (C) we had (Dm) clicked But (G) when I got back to (Dm) Britain, to my (G) Dad's place in (Dm) Wales He (G) read me out a (Dm) letter full of (A) graphic details It was a (Bb) list of my mis(Dm)demeanours from his (C) sister in Illi(Dm)nois (Bb) Far from praising me (F) greatly she (Gm) called me "a very strange (Dm) boy" A (Bb) strange boy - a (F) strange boy A des(Gm)cription that brought (Dm) me no joy A (Bb) strange boy - a (F) strange boy A (C) strange word to em(Dm)ploy (Dm) After Chicago a red eye had (Bb) flown me to (C) N.Y. (Dm) C An actress I'd met on a Boston train was (C) waiting there for (Dm)me Five o'clock in the morning I got (C) off the Chicago (Dm) plane She smiled at me politely, but her (Bb) welcome (C)was re(Dm)strained I (G) joined her rehearsal next (Dm)morning, my (G)accent worth divi(Dm)dends I (G)thought I was a (Dm)sure fire hit with (A) all her thespian friends But she (Bb) listed my trans(Dm)gressions that I (C)couldn't justi(Dm)fy And (Bb) polished it off with a (F) final: "Get (Gm) lost you really weird (Dm) guy!" A (Bb) weird guy - a (F) weird guy A (Gm) charge she wouldn't (Dm) clarify A (Bb) weird guy - a (F) weird guy If (C) words could kill I'd be (Dm) crucified BRIDGE (Am) I guess I'd misread the (Dm) signals Yanks weren't as (Am) open as they (Dm) seem I (Am) took their smiles at face (Dm) value En(A)tranced by my U.S. dream I'd (Am) broken unwritten con(Dm)ventions (Am) That was my Aunty's (Dm) theme I'd (G) caused offence wher(Dm)ever I went My be(A)haviour I couldn't re(Dm)deem (Dm) "What a gift to see ourselves as (Bb) other (C) people (Dm) do!" Said Rabbie Burns, let me tell you I (C) wish that were (Dm) true I was totally depressed when I (C) got back from the (Dm) States I questioned every move I made, I (Bb) was in (C) dire (Dm) straits But a (G) true friend said "From ad(Dm)versity (G) something we must (Dm) learn" (G) That was a turning (Dm) point in my life, my (A)confidence returned (Bb) Things started going (Dm) right for me a (C) real change in my (Dm) luck For (Bb) outworn social con(F)ventions (Gm) now I don't give a (Dm) damn A (Bb) strange boy - a (F) strange boy My (Gm) sanity it's (Dm) saved A (Bb) weird guy - a (F) weird guy An (C) honour I'll take to my (Dm) grave
