On behalf of everyone at the ROMANIAN ANGEL APPEAL thank you for buying this record. The appeal was launched by Barbara Bach, Yoko Ono, Linda McCartney and myself in April 1990 to develop a commited long-term programme of aid for the thousands of orphans in Romania who suffer varying degrees of deprivation. On my recent visits even the best conditions I found heartbreaking. Nobody really knows the extent of the problem – figures for the number of orphans vary from 10.000 (Ministry of Health, Bucharest) to 120.000 (Medical Aid For Free Romania) and often substantially higher figures are mentioned. We do know, however, that there are at least four hundred orphanages. Money raised by the ROMANIAN ANGEL APPEAL will fund a major scheme to provide basic necessities to make their lives more tolerable. The programme includes the provision of new plumbing and sanitation, installing sinks, toilets and washing machines along with the volunteers to install them; the provision of clothing, toys, care, medical aid and food supplies to protect and fortify their health along with the staff to administer them. Each orphanage will be carefully selected and a full team of carers, builders and medical staff will accompany each project to complete the work and care for the children. We will use the proceeds from this album to improve the living conditions in as many orphanages as we can possibly reach.
