This essay introduces a comprehensive Robustness Test Protocol designed to enhance the reliability of Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) results in empirical research. Authors Ioana-Elena Oana and Carsten Q. Schneider argue that standard QCA outcomes are often sensitive to subjective choices regarding calibration anchors, consistency thresholds, and frequency cutoffs. To address this, they propose a systematic framework that includes identifying sensitivity ranges and evaluating a robust core—the part of a solution that remains stable across multiple alternative models. The protocol employs both fit-oriented metrics to quantify mathematical stability and case-oriented perspectives to classify specific cases as robust, shaky, or possible. Furthermore, the authors demonstrate how these advanced diagnostic tools are implemented through the SetMethods package in the R software environment. This methodology aims to move beyond manual, time-consuming checks by providing researchers with a standardized, automated way to defend the validity of their set-theoretic findings.
