Ghana is a country blessed with tropical rainforests, home to towering trees and vibrant undergrowth, rich biodiversity, breathtaking wetlands with rich aquatic plants, serene coastal islands, and pristine beaches. Yet, the glittering gold that once drew European sailors to the Gold Coast, sparking wars and the transatlantic slave trade, is back with us. Today, gold remains Ghana’s leading foreign income commodity. However, illegal small-scale mining, locally known as Galamsey, is being conducted without adherence to environmental regulations, devastating river bodies and ecosystems. This is why we adopted the hymn Amazing Grace by the English clergyman and abolitionist John Newton, as the theme for our anti-Galamsey video. This version highlights the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining in Ghana. We hope it will inspire the force needed to end Galamsey, just as Newton’s hymn once fueled the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade. Lyrics: Amazing grace, how pure the gift, That keeps God's land so clean. Once clear and bright, now rivers drift, Through muddy sights unseen. The gold we seek through Galamsey, Brings forests to their knees. Once clear and bright, now rivers drift, Through muddy sights unseen.
