John Rawls' theory of justice attempts to explain why social inequalities are unjust and what a just society really is. Developed in his book A Theory of Justice (1971), it begins with the fundamental principle that every individual is inviolable. Later on, two basic principles of justice are introduced; namely, the equal liberty principle and the difference principle. According to Rawls, these principles express what he calls “justice as fairness.” To apply his theory of justice, Rawls appropriates the concepts of the original position and of the veil of ignorance.
