Vardzia Caves – the ancient Cave City of Georgia | Aspindza | Ahsan’s Window

We visited Borjomi, a resort town in central Georgia; 161 kms (100 miles) from Tbilisi, primarily for three places of interests Borjomi Park, Rabati Fortress and Vardzia Caves Town. Around 10 am we headed for Rabati Fortress from Borjomi which is an hour’s drive and then later on to Vardzia Caves another 1 hour drive. A paid shuttle service is available that will drop you at top base of the caves city from where you have to walk up to the cliff base till you reach the main gate. We hired a guide which is a must as the caves have rich history. There are lots of rooms carved out of the rocks, dining rooms, kitchens, wine cellars, a church, secret tunnels and much more. Each has its own intriguing history and our guide has been friendly and happily provided information and have attended to all of our queries. We entered the caves city from one side and exited from the other side taking a shortcut through secret tunnels. The total walking distance through the caves, rough steep steps and low height tunnels is around 3.5 kms (2.2 miles). If you are in Georgia do schedule a visit, you will not regret.
