In this video I'm demoing the NLC Delay No More - an unusual digital delay capable of going from sweetness to utter chaos. This thing is full of character. In the demo I'm using Rings as my voice source, and Starlab as an end of chain reverb. The video opens with two DNM modules cascaded together for a total of 4 gain stages. I then demonstrate the clean sound. Then the sound of a single DNM straight to the mixer with no reverb so you can hear the module alone. Next I dial the reverb back in to give a sense of how the module might be used in a patch. I attempt to demonstrate DNM's cleaner delay sounds, and eventually work my way back up to two DNM modules cascaded together with CV control before descending into chaos. Modules available for sale on the Prairie Modular Reverb page: https://reverb.com/ca/shop/tbs-gear-d... The module consists of two pt2399 delay chips in series, one with vactrol control. There are four different feedback paths. The A and B delay stages have their own individual feedback controls, and the module has two additional pots that allow you to pass feedback from the A stage into the B stage, and from the B stage to the A stage. As you can imagine - that can get pretty crazy! Delay is also controllable by CV or a pot. There are also coarse and fine time controls, and a wet/dry mix. The PT2399 is a legendary digital echo/delay chip, originally designed to add slapback echo and reverb sounds to karaoke machines. It quickly found its way into the heart of many classic and boutique guitar effect pedals, including: Death by audio echo dream 2 SolidGoldFX Electroman MkII Caroline Guitar Co Kilobyte JPTR FX Fernweh Earthquaker Devices Space Spiral And many more. Despite being digital, the the PT2399 sounds lo-fi and "analog" as opposed to crystal clean. According to the datasheet the chip is capable of 30ms to 340ms delay, but is often overclocked and lends itself well to chaos and self oscillation. Andrew over at NLC left the controls wide open on this one so you can really take the pt2399s into chaos territory. As he says “….its just a disaster. … capable of a huge variety of sounds ranging from sweet to slow motion train wreck.” Tips: if you want sweet delay, turn the coarse time knob all (or most) of the way clockwise and then control your delay time with the ‘fine’ knob. This way you stay nearer the spec of the chip and you get cleaner repeats. You can then dial in feedback and drones without descending fully into chaos, even with the delay knob maxed out. If you want to go into explosive chaos and time stretched weirdness, go counterclockwise on ‘coarse’ and you’ll quickly find yourself in fuzz pop bang territory.
