Kava, also known as Piper methysticum, is a plant that grows on the pacific islands like Vanuatu, Fiji and Hawaii. It’s a distant relative of the pepper plant, and the roots of Kava can be ground up and combined with water to make kava tea, which has a sedative effect that helps people with pain relief and relaxation. How does Kava work? Kava works to promote relaxation in 2 different ways. First, it promotes GABA activity, and GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, so it calms down your nervous system. Second, Kava increases levels of Dopamine, which helps to boost your mood and make you feel great. Kava doesn’t just work in your Central nervous system, it also works throughout your body, within your muscles to help you relax physically as well as mentally. Is Kava actually effective? Multiple studies in various subjects have proven that Kava is more effective than a placebo for the reduction of stress and anxiety.
