Krautrock - In Appreciation of Conny Plank - Talk

On 26th October 2013 the Goethe-Institut London presented "Krautrock - In Appreciation of Conny Plank". For this special event we brought together several generations of Krautrock inventors and innovators, Krautrock-inspired artists and emerging young talent who cite the importance of Krautrock on their music. Musicians Cold Pumas, Kreidler and Dieter Moebius (formerly of Cluster) performed and we had a fantastic DJ Set from Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab) and Disko Cabine. Prior to the musical programme a conversation of Conny's son Stephan Plank and Dieter Moebius moderated by Geeta Dayal took place. Originally a term coined by the British Music Press pejoratively referring to almost all rock and pop music produced in Germany during the 1960s and 1970s, Krautrock is now synonymous with an original contribution to international pop culture. The key person in developing the sounds of Krautrock was the late Konrad "Conny" Plank, a German sound engineer, producer and musician, who is considered a seminal figure and innovator of post-war European music. His creativity as a sound engineer allowed him to produce innovative and influential work in the 1970s and 1980s, which to this day has not lost its relevance. Conny's work as a resourceful artist and producer can be heard on many records by artists such as Kraftwerk, Neu!, Brian Eno, Cluster, Can, D.A.F., Ultravox, Devo and Eurythmics and his sound-recording methodologies have also shaped the work of many contemporary producers and musicians alike, such as Radiohead, Sonic Youth, Portishead and David Bowie to name but a few. We were delighted to invite Conny's son Stephan Plank, who was only 13 years old when Conny passed away and left his famous studio to his wife and son. In 2013 Grönland Records released a 4 CD Box as tribute to Conny Plank, in spring 2014 a documentary film made in collaboration with Stephan will follow: Who's that man depicts the search for Conny Plank, the man and producer, whose life and work left so many impressions and influences -- it also documents the search of a son for his father who passed away too early. Stephan Plank was in conversation with Dieter Moebius, another important figure in contemporary music. Dieter Moebius collaborated closely with Conny Plank on five studio albums from 1979-1986 as Moebius & Plank. Their particular sound is considered the first foray into what would later be called techno and electronica.
