In the Supreme Court hearing on the Delhi riots case, senior advocate Kapil Sibal argued for Umar Khalid, highlighting that out of 116 related cases, 97 ended in acquittals and 17 involved fabricated evidence. Justice Kumar asked how that concerned Khalid, to which Sibal said he was only pointing out the quality of the investigation. Meanwhile, senior advocate Salman Khurshid argued for Shifa-ur-Rehman, saying he was wrongly accused under UAPA despite no evidence of illegal activity. He added that peaceful protest isn’t a crime and sought bail on the same grounds as co-accused Natasha Narwal, Devangana Kalita, and Asif Iqbal Tanha, who were granted bail in 2021.
