(12 Nov 2021) Clashes broke out this week between residents and local police in the Tunisian city of Agareb, which hosts the main landfill for nearby Sfax, Tunisia's second largest city. Authorities decided to close the landfill in September, but with no alternative plan in place thousands of tons of waste to accumulated in Sfax's streets and public spaces for over a month. On Monday, authorities abruptly reopened the landfill in Agareb prompting new protests over mismanagement and the lack of a longer-term solution. "The smell is deadly. We want to close this landfill, which was closed by a judicial decision" Nadra a local activist told the Associated Press during a protest on Wednesday. Another protester, who did not provide her name said that the landfill must be closed again in line with a 2019 ruling which prohibited its reopening. "The law must be implemented. These security forces are supposed to come to implement the law and not act against the application of law" she said. Over the course of several days, protesters marched through the streets of Agareb, singing the national anthem and chanting pro-democratic slogans. One man was reported dead after he was hit by a tear gas canister, though Tunisia's Interior Ministry claimed the man died at home due to a heart attack. Tunisia has long struggled with waste management issues as the majority of an estimated 2.5 million tons of annual waste collected ends in landfills without being recycled or incinerated. The issue poses a challenge for President Kais Saied's new government, just recently appointed last month, as the country finds itself in the midst of a political crisis.
