_“In ceramics there are rules, and I'm all for breaking them, because how do you know what's going to happen unless you try?”_ Step into the studio of artist Jacqui Ramrayka! Jacqui is a British-Guyanese artist who works with ceramics to explore themes of identity, home and belonging in relation to her Indo-Caribbean diasporic identity. She explores how ceramics can help to give a tangible form to these intangible concepts. Jacqui breaks the rules of ceramics with her bold use of materials; combining porcelain and earthenware clay, or incorporating found objects like driftwood and metal. Jacqui’s making process of using offcuts, remnants, fractures and erosion is just as important as the final object. Her intriguing pieces are never quite finished, and always offer the potential for change. Throughout her V&A residency Jacqui also led Clay & Conversation workshops, where she met with women from the Indo-Carribean community to explore themes of home together. *Chapters:* 00:00 Meet artist Jacqui Ramrayka 00:55 What are Jacqui’s ceramic vessels about? 01:16 The inspiration of found objects 02:32 The thrill of opening the kiln 03:05 In the studio 03:48 Breaking the rules of ceramics 04:14 Working with young people in schools workshops at the V&A 05:36 Exploring the links between porcelain and the Indo-Carribean disapora within the V&A collection 06:36 Clay & Conversation workshops and discussing identity and belonging in a safe space 07:13 The power of using clay in Clay & Conversation workshops 08:12 Time, headspace and experimentation in the Adobe Creative Residency Jacqui was the Global Ceramics Resident as part of the Adobe Creative Residency programme at the V&A in 2024.
