What you can expect from a legal psilocybin experience in Oregon

Nearly three years after a majority of Oregon voters said yes to the therapeutic use of psilocybin, the hallucinogenic mushroom is finally available to the public. Before the still federally illegal substance could be bought and sold in the Beaver state, the Oregon Health Authority was tasked with creating and implementing rules for the rollout. Finalizing the rules took roughly two years. Now the state agency has provided licenses to two manufacturers, three testing labs, six service centers and 62 licensed facilitators. A facilitator remains in the room with clients while they are under the influence of the substance, which must be purchased and ingested at a licensed service center. Josh Goldstein is one of the first cohorts of students that went through one of OHA's approved training programs. "I was a teacher for like 20 years, and then I found myself as the academic director at a therapeutic boarding school for the past nine years," he said. "I have been immersed in that therapeutic field for almost a decade." Facilitators are required to take at least 120 hours of training from one of the 25 approved programs. Goldstein said he had some experiences with the substance before it became legal in therapeutic settings and had done a lot of research about it prior to the course. "The way that I had developed my process and my approach in the underground was validated through the training, really understanding this internal healing wisdom," he said. "The other piece that is really important is trauma; everyone is coming to this with some sort of trauma, so holding that seriously in a compassionate way and assessing people appropriately and referring out (to mental health professionals) because I am not the expert in those kinds of things."
