Teeth (Mastication) Grinding & Cutting: Teeth cut, tear, and grind food into smaller, manageable pieces, increasing its surface area for enzymes to act on. Types: Different teeth (incisors, canines, premolars, molars) are specialized for different chewing actions. Tongue (Mixing & Propulsion) Mixing: The tongue kneads food, mixing it thoroughly with saliva to moisten it and form the bolus. Taste & Swallowing: It helps form the bolus and presses it against the palate and towards the pharynx (throat) for swallowing. Speech: Also crucial for articulating words by moving against teeth and palate. Saliva's Role (Chemical Digestion) Produced by salivary glands (stimulated by food). Contains amylase, which begins the chemical breakdown of starches (carbohydrates) into sugars. Lingual lipase also starts fat breakdown. The Process Ingestion: Food enters the mouth. Mastication: Teeth chew food. Mixing: Tongue mixes food with saliva. Bolus Formation: A soft, moistened ball (bolus) is formed. Swallowing: Tongue pushes the bolus to the pharynx, triggering swallowing into the esophagus.
