The Man Ramana Maharshi Granted Enlightenment | The Life of Annamalai Swami

Sri Annamalai Swami, a disciple of Bhagavan Ramana Maharishi, arrived at Bhagavan's ashram at 22. He dedicated many years to serving him, and through Bhagavan's grace and his own rigorous practice, he attained Self-realization. He would pass away a Jivan Mukta (liberated being) Ramana Maharshi was a renowned Hindu sage known for his teachings on Self-Inquiry and Devotion. Born in 1879 in Southern India, he experienced a transformative spiritual awakening at 16. He devoted his life to teaching and guiding others toward realization of God until his passing in 1950. He is considered a liberated being. Annamalai Swami was indeed ready for such grace to be given to him by Ramana Maharshi. Mukti can not be easily given to anyone and everyone. There are a select few who are ready for such grace to dawn upon them. Once another person asked Ramana Maharshi for samadhi. The person asked if Ramana could give him samadhi as Sri Ramakrishna gave Swami Vivekananda. Ramana Maharshi replied: “Are you another Vivekananda?” Likewise, we too beg for much from the Lord but go on indulging in much worldly endeavors without making any effort toward God-Realization in anyway. How then, can we expect grace to fall upon us, from God or Guru? Annamalai Swami worked for 9-10 years before Ramana Maharshi, through his grace, gave Annamalai Swami the experience of deep samadhi. Afterward, Annamalai would live elsewhere so to make the experience of establishment in the Atman permanent. Grace is always blowing, but who is ready to raise their sail? And again, we must continue to clean the pot even if God or the Guru washes it once for us lest it gathers dirt and dust again. There is both an essential grace and self-effort involved in spiritual life.
