The wind was cold and bitter and the action of slamming his foot on the frozen sidewalk felt good. He began to stamp both his feet and try to get some feeling back into his toes. Pulling his hands out of his pockets he blew furiously on equally frozen fingers before deciding to cross over a block and hit Velma's Diner. Engels wasn't going anywhere and as soon as the Sheriff was through with his meeting then Joe would - again - try to get an appointment. Rushing and skidding across the street Joe ducked into Velma's. It was busy. Everyone and his dog wanted a hot coffee by the signs. At least this lousy weather was doing someone some good. Diamond looked for an empty table. He was in luck. A guy had stood up and was heading out into the snow flurries. Diamond squinted. Yeah it was that snapper Simmons. Guy looked like he'd seen a ghost. Probably been out all night in the freezing cold like me, thought Joe. Not a freelancer. Pulled a pay-check from the Advertiser didn't he? Yeah. Joe had met him a few times but if Simmons was working Joe had always made sure he kept well out of shot. Getting your mug in the paper was bad for business - even if you were at a crime scene in a professional capacity. Joe's clients valued discretion. Brenda the waitress bustled by and picked up Joe's order even as he sat down. "Namesake?" she asked. Joe nodded and shoved away Simmons' cup noticing the discarded napkin. It had been doodled on. Some kind of figure made of branches? Odd. Simmons wasn't much of an artist either. No wonder he worked with a camera. Still the crude drawing was strangely unsettling. Joe crushed it and popped it into the empty cup quickly looking away. He saw Velma and Lance, the short order cook, running themselves ragged at the counter. Surprised Joe also noticed Mandy Thompson. He waved but she didn't see him and she rushed out holding a danish. That was okay. Joe owed her three bucks for the information on that crazy sigil those clowns down at the Twilight Lodge had left under the occasional table in their waiting room. Joe grimaced as Brenda slopped down a fresh coffee at his elbow. That goddamned lodge. Easy money taking a package from Providence Museum back to that frosty jasper Carl Sanford. Yeah right. The brassy dame at the Providence relic house hadn't looked like no shrinking archivist to Joe. He probably should have expected the goons who had sapped him for the goods right outside. Joe rubbed his neck at the memory. Chasing those mugs down had only turned them up dead inside their mangled sedan in a ditch just outside Arkham. A simple car accident. Too much speed, too much ice, too much curve... it wrote the eulogy by itself but Joe knew a gunshot blowout on a tyre when he saw one. Question was could he convince that dumb bull Engels back at the clubhouse? “Ice Demon” by Kevin Macleod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: by Attribution 4.0 licence http://creativecommons.org/licenses/b...
