Myroslav Gutej - Piano Sonata No 3 was composed in April 1991 When I started composing Classical music in 1991, I basically did not want to follow the norms of traditional harmonic progressions so I began a style with no modulations. My Mass in C minor composed in 1991 actually has 600 bars of no modulation. This Sonata no.3 was composed in this style. In my next Piano Sonata no.4 I began composing with a different approach to Harmonic progressions I released 6 of my Piano Sonatas in 2002. Fanfare Magazine acknowledged what I was doing and came out with this quote. "These 6 piano Sonatas are highly original and boldly showcase what is essentially a new musical language". The first movement of this Piano Sonata no.3 depicts Thunder dancing to a techno beat. Both hands are playing octaves at the extreme ends of the piano. This is very taxing and this piece can only be played as the last piece of a recital as it takes a few minutes for ones hands and arms to recover The 2nd movement was inspired by a recording of church bells from a church where my mother used to attend in Slovenia where she was born. In fact she sometimes performed the role of campanologist 0:00 Piano Sonata No 3 - 1st Movement 0:35 Piano Sonata No 3 - 2nd Movement Recorded, and mastered by Mark Whitehouse Recorded at Western Australian Conservatorium of Music Yamaha concert grand piano Photo by Shirley Melville, CD Design by Jude Boersma
