Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: 2 Marches, K. 335/320a (with Score) Composed: 1777-79 Performance: Academy of St. Martin in the Fields 0:00 No. 1 in D major 4:09 No. 2 in D major With the exception of those that have a specific function within the context of his operas, virtually all of Mozart's marches were composed as introductions to a serenade or divertimento; it was customary for the musicians performing such pieces to march to the place (in the case of serenades the venue was often outdoors) where the music was to be played. In keeping with this tradition, these two marches (K335) were most likely written for the big Serenade in D, K320 "Posthorn", the last and finest of the serenades Mozart composed in Salzburg. The Serenade is dated 3 August 1779 on Mozart's autograph, so the two marches doubtless date from the same time. Exactly why Mozart would compose two marches for the same serenade is difficult to say, though it seems possible that one was played by the musicians on their entrance, and the other as they left. K335/1 includes a quotation from the beginning of Johann Christian Bach's aria "Non sò d'onde viene" from his opera Alessandro nell' Indie, while its companion quotes from a folk song. The scoring for No. 1 is for 2 oboes, 2 horns, 2 trumpets and strings, while the only difference in No. 2 is the replacement of oboes by flutes.
