CANTOR JOSEPH MALOVANY - TENOR JOSEPH MALOVANY has served as the Cantor of New York's prestigious Fifth Avenue Synagogue since 1973. Holding the academic position of Distinguished Professor of Liturgical Music at Ycshiva University, he also is a Dean of the J.D.C. Moscow Academy of Jewish Music. Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, he served as Cantor at Tel Aviv's Bilu synagogue, as Cantor of the Israeli Army and at synagogues in Johannesburg, South Africa and London, England. Joseph Malovany is a holder of the highest artistic diplomas from the Music Academy in Tel Aviv and from Great Britain's Royal Academy of Music. He is also a Fellow of the Trinity College of Music and has been awarded with many citations and honors from various national and international organizations, the latest of which is the Tel Aviv University's Award for Tolerance and Understanding. He is Honorary President of the Cantorial Council of America and Past Chairman of the Board of the American Society for Jewish Music. In 1997, the Joseph Malovany Chair for Advanced Studies in Jewish Liturgical Music was established, by New York's Yeshiva University at its Belz School of Jewish Music. Joseph Malovany has performed many times as soloist with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. As the tenor in Noam Sheriff's monumental symphony "Mcchayc Hamctim" (He Who Revives The Dead), he sang in its premiere with the Israel Philharmonic in Amsterdam, later also performing it throughout Europe and Israel and at its American premiere with the combined orchestra consisting of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and The Philadelphia Orchestra under Maestro Zubin Mehta in the presence of 20,000 people. Joseph Malovany possesses a brilliant spinto tenor voice acclaimed in Opera Houses, Concert Halls and Synagogues across the world, and described by the London Guardian as "most powerful, beautiful and expressive spinto technique...sturdy and heroic" and by the Swedish newspaper Goteboras Postcn as "Judaism's Jussi Bjorling". Leonard Bernstein, after hearing him over the Jewish High Holy Days, expressed his hope to hear Cantor Malovany "sing beyond the Altar." Although he turned down invitations to sing major operatic roles on the opera stage, Joseph Malovany performs oratorio and symphonic works which require the tenor voice as soloist. He has toured extensively in Europe, South America, the United States, Israel, Russia and the former Soviet Union. His international appearances include billings with many international orchestras such as Israeli Philharmonic, Russian State Symphony, the New York Symphony, Bucharest Opera Orchestra, Prague Symphony Orchestra, Haifa Symphony, Metropolitan Orchestra, Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra and Israel Symphony etc. Joseph Malovany, as a representative of world Jewry, has performed at Joint Sessions of Congress in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington DC and at many major events on behalf of the State of Israel. His international performances have been enthusiastically recived on the stages of Amsterdam's Royal Opera House, London's Royal Festival and Queen Elizabeth Halls and Barbican Center, Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher and Alice Tully Halls in New York, Brussels Palace of Fine Arts, Paris's Cite de la Musique Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory, Budapest's Philharmonic and Vigado Halls, the Bucharest Opera House, the Herodion Amphitheater near Bethlehem, the Prague Rudolfinum Hall and the Prague Castle. He has also sung in the famed synagogues in Szeged and the Dohany in Budapest, Hungary, the Pilszan synagogue in Bohemia and in the Temple synagogue of Krakow, Poland. His performances in Spain include appearances in Toledo and in the opera house of Santander. Joseph Malovany sang at the premiere of Israeli composer Andre Hajdu's cantata "Tz'ror Hachayim" in New York, Miami and Tel Aviv, and in 1997, Joseph Malovany performed the tenor role in the premieres of Jan Radzinski's "Shirat Ma'ayan" and Anatoljus Scndcrovas's "Shc'ma Israel". In July of the same year he performed at the premiere of his own musical composition to the text of Israel's Declaration of Independence in honor of its fiftieth anniversary which took place in the Knesset (Israel's Parliament). This tall, statuesque and genuine cantor and singer brings much dignity, beauty and warmth with his rare quality, crystal-like tenor voice. World leading music critics have hailed his performances as "thrilling", "profoundly moving", "unmatched", "spellbound" and "warm with consummate artistry". One commentator, in a local newspaper, described Joseph Malovany as "The Jewish Court Singer of New York", and the Toronto Globe and Mail called him "The Pavarotti of the synagogue".
