Oral lichen planus is a chronic inflammation that affects the mucous membranes of the mouth, and that can appear as reticular white spots or reddened areas that ulcerate, being in this case called erosive lichen planus. Pemphigus is an autoimmune disease that causes blistered and ulcer-like lesions on the skin and mucous membranes. Hairy tongue is caused by an overgrowth of dead skin cells, causing elongation of the papillae and staining of bacteria, food, tobacco, or other substances in the mouth. Geographic tongue or benign migratory glossitis is caused by atrophy of filiform papillae, which make the tongue look like a map.
