In their 1956 paper In Defense of a Dogma, Grice & Strawson formulate eminently sensible criticism of Quine's arguments in Two Dogmas. I briefly discuss the argumentative situation, but am especially interested in how these papers interact. Where Grice & Strawson hold that there is no inconsistency in the position of those who make the analytic/synthetic distinction, Quine is offering a radical new programme for philosophers to sign up to. The careful arguments of the two Brits -- valid though they may be -- are powerless against this.
