"It's a pathogen reduction system, so it's going in and treating our platelet products to ensure that it's a safer product coming out for each patient," said Jeremy Puckett, blood center supervisor at Lee Health. Platelets are clotting agents that circulate in the blood—they are essential for things like traumatic injuries, cancer, and disease. "There's always a demand for blood donors. It's one of those precious resources that we can't engineer. Then platelets are a step further because platelets only have a five-day shelf life," he explained. After platelets are donated, they undergo a series of tests to ensure they are safe from bacteria and viruses. "So, this system is designed to go after that important product, the platelets, and try to neutralize any pathogens that could be in there. It's doing that by getting a compound into the DNA or RNA. You hit it with the UVA light and it causes a cross-linkage in that DNA and that RNA and no longer allows that virus, that pathogen, to reproduce," said Puckett. Speeding up the testing process and creating a safer product for patients in need.
