“Somebody’s Trying to Kill Me.” It started as a joke — the kind of joke Black men make to survive the pressure. But underneath that laugh was something real… something we couldn’t ignore anymore. This episode of Dear Brother was sparked by the loss of a coworker and friend — a brother we both knew — who died by suicide. A man who once said he felt like he had no one to talk to… even though thousands showed up to his funeral. That contradiction shook us. It forced us to confront the truth about what Black men carry in silence. So today, we’re talking about the crisis nobody wants to name out loud: the rising rates of suicide among Black men over the last two decades. We talk about the pressure that builds when you’re expected to be strong all the time. We talk about the fear, the trauma, the isolation, and the survival instincts we inherit. We talk about the jokes we use to hide the pain. We talk about the voice that lies to us — the one that says we’re alone. And we talk about why counseling, community, and conversation are not optional… they’re life‑saving. This isn’t about statistics. This is about lived experience. This is about the brothers we’ve lost. This is about the brothers still here. This is about breaking the silence before the silence breaks us. If you’ve ever felt the pressure building… If you’ve ever carried something heavy and quiet… If you’ve ever laughed to keep from breaking… This episode is for you.
