Chapters 0:00 Introduction 0:22 Laparoscopic Umbilical hernia treatment 1:20 Post surgical care Dr. Vineet Mannan has thrown light on laparoscopic umbilical hernia surgery and its post-surgical care in this video. What is an umbilical hernia? An umbilical hernia is a condition in which a portion of the intestine protrudes through a weak spot or tear in the abdominal muscles near the belly button. It is more common in infants, but can also occur in adults. Laparoscopic repair is one of the surgical techniques used for the treatment of umbilical hernia. It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that is performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, the surgeon makes several small incisions in the abdomen, and a laparoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a camera and light attached) is inserted through one of the incisions. The surgeon uses the camera to visualize the hernia and surrounding tissue on a monitor in the operating room. Laparoscopic repair for umbilical hernia has several advantages over traditional open surgery, including less pain, less scarring, faster recovery time, and a lower risk of infection. Post-surgical care Caring after an umbilical hernia surgery involves: Engaging in regular activities such as climbing stairs, and walking. Avoiding strenuous activities and sexual intercourse till your doctor gives you a go-ahead. Resting and sleeping, but not being completely sedentary. Staying on a liquid/soft diet, taking stool softeners as advised, avoiding junk/fatty food, and consuming high-fiber fruits and vegetables with plenty of water. Avoiding operating any heavy machinery. Working only till the load is tolerable. Not lifting weights more than 10 kgs for around six weeks. Not driving as long as you are on narcotics and you feel pain. Not drinking alcohol.
