Songs of Freedom: Protest Music in Black and White | Redemption Songs

After being banned from television for 17 years, Pete Seeger made a triumphant return, appearing on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour twice in 1967. His first appearance was censored, largely to appease critics. President Lyndon B. Johnson, chief amongst them and holdover naysayers from the Second Red Scare era, censored “Waist Deep In The Big Muddy,” the anti-Vietnam song that Seeger had written earlier that year, which not so subtly, criticized the president. Undaunted, The Smothers Brothers brought him back to the show months later where Seeger sang a medley of self-penned songs, closing out with “Waist Deep…” For the rest of his life, nearly five decades, Seeger would lend his name to a number of causes. A long-lasting symbol of speaking truth to power, receiving award after award, canonizing his works, himself, and cementing his stature. He personified how songs can have a galvanizing effect on society, uniting disenfranchised and disparate people under the melody of a movement. Even as a young, white and free man in 20th century America, Pete Seeger was removed from the modern media menu.
