BSHAA was delighted to welcome Jodie Ounsely and her father, Phil, in a conversation with Alex Gardner, BSHAA's Head of Marketing and Communications. Jodie's story is a powerful testament to the life-changing impact of audiology. Born prematurely, medication to treat her condition resulted in profound deafness. However, thanks to a cochlear implant at a young age (making her the youngest in the country at the time), Jodie has thrived. This heartfelt interview explores: The challenges Jodie and her family faced due to hearing loss. The incredible support they received. How cochlear implants transformed Jodie's life. Jodie's story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for those with hearing loss. It highlights the crucial role our industry plays in empowering individuals and their families to reach their full potential. Phil is a former professional mixed martial artist and a contender on The Gladiators back in the day, a training buddy, and a great inspiration and encourager to Jodie. Jodie is also the Honorary President of UK Deaf Sport, and in 2023 she was named among @BBC Woman’s Hour Power List 2023 Women in Sport. Jodie and Phil joined BSHAA to celebrate World Hearing Day and to kick off the BSHAA Roadshow 2024.
