The Sound Health Network is a groundbreaking collaboration between leading scientists at UC San Francisco Medical Center, the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Institutes of Health, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and renowned soprano Renée Fleming. The purpose of this network is to promote scientific research on how music impacts health and wellbeing. This session is led by network Co-director and neuroscientist Dr. Charles Limb, who will present an overview of music cognition research and the genesis of the Sound Health Network and discuss innovative studies on the neural basis of musical creativity. Invited panelists present summaries of their seminal music-based work and participate in a substantive discussion of the importance of music for mental health. Panelists include: Bassist Victor Wooten; neuroscientist, musician, and science communicator Dr. Indre Viskontas; and Assal Habibi, an associate research professor at the University of Southern California. This panel was originally presented in-person at The NAMM Show in 2023.
