THE CRIMES AND LEGACY OF COMMUNISM | Višnja Starešina Višnja Starešina (Zorkovac, Ozalj municipality, 1960), Croatian journalist, publicist, author of documentaries. From 1984 to 2004, she worked as a journalist and editor in Večernji list. During the war in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, as a diplomatic correspondent for "Večernji list", she followed the international peace negotiations in the former Yugoslavia from 1994-1997. she is a permanent correspondent of "Večernji list" at the UN in Geneva, where the international peace conference for the former Yugoslavia was then headquartered. From 1996-2002 is a special reporter for "Večernji list" from the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague. From 2004 to 2012, she worked as an independent journalist, writing regular political columns for the business weekly Lider, engaged in journalistic work and film documentaries. In 2012, he started working in the newly established Office for Finding, Marking and Maintaining the Graves of Victims of Communist Crimes after the Second World War. Her areas of special professional interest are international politics, security policy, international criminal courts, war crimes. The Croatian Centre for the Renewal of Culture (Centar za obnovu kulture – COK) hosted New Direction's 2023 Summer University from Tuesday 11 to Friday 14 July at the Hotel Dubrovnik in Zagreb. An intense and decisive struggle is underway in Europe and beyond. Reheated versions of old-fashioned Socialism and New Left movements, masquerading as liberal, are trying to subvert traditional Western values. That confrontation involves not just government but nationhood and the identity of the human person. How can conservatives fight back and win? What issues must we address? What messages should we press? Our Summer University dealt with all this – working from first principles and historic experience.
