Hi, I’m Joe from webbsonline and today I’m going to briefly discuss UV lights and bacteria. So, the big question – Will a UV light interfere with bacteria? The short answer – Yes, it can. Ultraviolet light does not discriminate what it kills. If good bacteria passes over the light it will be destroyed. So, I would recommend that you turn off the UV light for about 2-3 days after application. This is when the bacteria are growing most rapidly and when they are the most sensitive to the UV light. This will give the bacteria proper time to colonize. When I say colonize – think of the bacteria as microorganisms with a whole bunch of grabby little hands. Once added to the pond it grabs onto the first thing it can and colonizes there. Mainly the side walls of the pond, biological filter media, and such.
