As of 6PM, Price Canyon Road has reopened to traffic in both directions after a pre-dawn tanker truck rollover. A multitude of agencies were on scene to ensure this operation went smoothly - CHP – San Luis Obispo acting as the incident commander, CAL FIRE San Luis Obispo providing scene safety, representatives from the County of San Luis Obispo Environmental Health office and HAZMAT team, management from the trucking company, County Public Works providing traffic control and finally Johnboy's Towing as well as Eppler Towing out of Firebaugh (Fresno County) As discussed in the earlier post (link: / 1070680913044345 , this tanker truck was full of liquid nitrogen. It may sound scary to some, but the substance is non-flammable and non-toxic. The diesel tanks of the truck were not punctured and no hazardous materials were lost. Once representatives from the trucking company arrived on scene from LA, the team was able to formulate a plan to best remove the truck, trailer and contents safely. Eppler Towing's 80 ton & 60 ton rotator cranes from the Central Valley were requested to best safely deal with the tanker, weighing in at just under 80,000 pounds and far off the roadway. Liquid nitrogen was vented to atmosphere from the trailer to lighten the load, which quickly changed from liquid to a gas and created a layer of "ground-fog", and then dissipated into the air (which is... 78% nitrogen!!) The cab of the truck was disconnected from the trailer and stabilized in place, while rigging was connected to the trailer. The trailer was then slowly able to be dragged up the hill and rotated back upright and level. Once again, the trailer was allowed to vent the remaining liquid nitrogen in the tank, stabilizing itself. It then was brought up to the road, loaded on a trailer and removed from the scene. Crews then went to work uprighting the cab of the truck and bringing it up the same way. All in all probably not the way most imagined they would spend Christmas Eve but no one was hurt, the mission was accomplished and the environment, besides a few damaged trees from the initial collision, was not harmed. Crews even worked right through a heavy mid-afternoon downpour... what a team effort!
