In the Brothers Karamazov, Fyodor Dostoevsky wrote, “If anything does preserve society even in our time and does regenerate and transform the criminal it is only the law of Christ.” This week our host Guilherme had the privilege of moderating a conversation with three experts on religious freedom and criminal justice reform to discuss the value of religion and faith in reforming our criminal justice system and transforming and reintegrating the criminal into society. Our experts looked at the impact of mass incarceration not only on the convicted criminal but on their families and explored how sincere people of faith and goodwill can act to reform our criminal justice system and in the words of Amos 5:24 “let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” Panel Discussion with Experts. ➡️ Biography of James Sonne - James Sonne is a professor of law at Stanford Law School and founding director of its Religious Liberty Clinic, the leading and only full-time academic program in the country where students can learn the practice and profession of law through supervised litigation in that field. He is an experienced and award-winning teacher, practitioner, and scholar, with particular expertise in law and religion issues. ➡️ Biography of Bahiyyah M. Muhammad - Bahiyyah M. Muhammad received her B.S. in Administration of Justice from Rutgers University- New Brunswick Campus with a minor in Psychology and a Criminology Certificate. As an undergraduate, she became a Ronald E. McNair Scholar and a Minority Academic Career Program (MAC)- Undergraduate Research Fellow. She also spent a semester as a research intern at the University of Natal, located in Pietermaritzberg, South Africa where she interviewed natives on their attitudes toward the criminal justice system. Dr. Muhammad went on to receive her M.S. in Criminal Justice from John Jay College of Criminal Justice- New York City. As a graduate, she presented research findings at numerous professional conferences such as those held by the Academy of Criminal Justice Science (ACJS), American Society of Criminology (ASC), Sisters of the Academy (SOA), and the American Correction Association (ACA). ➡️ Biography of Salahuddin Mustafa Muhammad - Salahuddin Mustafa Muhammad was the American imam of the Masjid al-Ikhlas mosque in Newburgh, New York. He was also the Muslim chaplain of Bard College and had been a chaplain for the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision since 1985.Muhammad holds a B.A. in the social sciences from SUNY New Paltz, and a Masters of Professional Studies degree in theology and counseling from the New York Theological Seminary.[1] Muhammad received a certificate of Islamic Chaplaincy from Hartford Seminary in 2007. He received a Doctor of Ministry degree from the same seminary in 2010 in Islamic studies/Christian-Muslim relations. Muhammad told journalist Daniel J. Wakin that he was attracted to Islam as a fatherless 13-year-old growing up in Harlem, New York. He became a student of Clarence 13X, founder of the Nation of Gods and Earths. Since that time he became a part of the Nation of Islam, and in 1975 he accepted the leadership of Imam Warith Deen Mohammed, and has been a dedicated associate.Muhammad is known for his work with prison inmates. ➡️ Biography of Moderator - Guilherme Brasil de Souza is born in Porto Alegre, RS and grew up and lived between the United States of America and Bahia in what is now Fadba. Guilherme graduated in 2016 from Southern Adventist University with a degree in Theology and Archeology where he participated in the fourth expedition to Tel Lachish, Israel between 2014-2017. After graduating with his bachelor's degree, Guilherme pursued a Master of Arts in Religion (MAR) at Yale University in the history of Christianity where he graduated in 2019. After his master's degree, Guilherme worked on religious freedom and human rights at the General Conference as assistant to Dr. Ganoune Diop later at the Religious Freedom Center and also at a think tank in Washington DC focused on public policy and individual freedom issues called the Institute for Humane Studies. Guilherme is currently working on his PhD in Religion and Society (i.e. History of Christianity) at Princeton Theological Seminary with a focus on issues of religious freedom. ⚠️ P.S.
