Cheating is often from substitution or adulteration. Some lab results may come out as invalid specimen. Substitution on a Drug Test When someone does not provide their own specimen for their drug test, this is often called substitution. The employee or applicant brings something to the drug test collection and does not provide their own urine. This is not normal human urine. This could be synthetic urine of some other fluid. The lab can often detect these substituted specimens. The MRO will then report this drug test result as a Refusal to Test. Adulteration on a Drug Test When someone adds something to their urine drug test specimen, this is call adulteration. This could be bleach, vinegar or some product they purchased to try and cheat on the drug test. The lab can often detect these substances that are added to urine for a drug test. The MRO will then report this drug test result as a Refusal to Test. Invalid Specimen Sometimes a drug test result gets reported as an invalid specimen. At the laboratory, the testing cannot find a scientifically supportable negative, positive, substituted or adulterated result. This result is not negative, not positive and there is no proof of cheating. There is some interference and the testing cannot be completed. The MRO does investigate and discuss this with the donor. This may require a retest. Cheating on Drug Testing – FMCSA Clearinghouse Starting in January of 2020, MRO’s will be required to report for DOT CDL drivers MRO verified positive results and MRO verified refusals to test to the new FMCSA Clearinghouse. MRO verified refusals to test may occur based on adulteration or substitution determined by specimen validity testing. It is possible that many MRO’s throughout the country may elect to not perform this service and get out of the MRO business. Donors are often caught cheating on the drug test as a result of the specimen validity testing at the laboratory.
