The waiting period for pesticides, also known as the pre-harvest interval (PHI), is the amount of time that must pass between the last application of a pesticide and the harvest of the crop. Do not harvest crops (especially vegetables) until the waiting period for the pesticide is over. Pesticides leave residues on crops. Observe the waiting period specified on the label or recommended by your extension worker. This time period specified on the pesticide label is designed to ensure that residues of the pesticide have sufficiently degraded or dissipated to levels that are considered safe for human consumption. The waiting period can vary depending on the type of crop grown, the specific pesticide used, and the dosage. It is essential for farmers and pesticide applicators to carefully read and follow the instructions on the pesticide label, including information on the waiting period. For example, when we apply insecticide - Chlorantraniliprole 18.5% w/w SC to control stem borer in rice, the waiting period between the last spray and harvest is about 47 days while when we apply the same chemical to control diamond back moth in cabbage, the period we have to wait for harvest is only 3 days.
