European leaders met in Paris on Monday (Feb 17) for emergency talks, calling for higher spending to ramp up the region’s defence capabilities. They were looking to forge a united and coordinated response to United States President Donald Trump’s administration’s policy shift on the Russia-Ukraine war. Officials acknowledged they need to do a better job of sharing the burden of financing defence, but remain split on the idea of deploying peacekeepers to Ukraine to back up any peace deal.
