Timothy Welbeck is a civil rights attorney, scholar, and Hip Hop artist who currently serves as the founding director of the Center for Anti-Racism at Temple University. Originally from Memphis, he now leads groundbreaking work in Philadelphia, combining law, education, and culture to advocate for justice. He’s been featured by CNN, The Washington Post, NPR, REVOLT, and more. A professor of Africology and African American Studies, Welbeck recently made headlines for launching a new Temple University course titled “Kendrick Lamar and the Morale of M.A.A.D City.” This new course takes an Africological approach to Kendrick’s life and music — exploring Compton’s socioeconomic conditions, the evolution of West Coast Hip Hop, and how Kendrick uses lyrics to address poverty, race, and identity. Welbeck is also a seasoned artist himself and the author of the upcoming book No City for Young Men — which examines Hip Hop as a reflection of urban struggle and resistance. In this interview, we explore the inspiration behind the course, the power of Hip Hop in the classroom, and what Kendrick Lamar’s music reveals about America today. 👑 WHO IS CURTISS KING?!
