Maitri Youth Convention Brings Community Together to Address Youth Mental Health and Well-Being On Sunday, February 8th, community youth gathered at the Cupertino Public Library for the Maitri Youth Convention: Youth and Mental Health, a dynamic, youth-led event focused on emotional well-being and mental health awareness. The well-attended convention brought together local high school students, mental health professionals, community leaders, and families to openly address the challenges impacting young people’s emotional health. Through keynote addresses, Q&A sessions, open-mic talks, and peer-to-peer conversations, participants explored practical tools for emotional wellness, reducing stigma, and encouraging help-seeking behaviors. The convention was formally inaugurated by Cupertino Councilmember Sheila Mohan, marking a meaningful beginning to an afternoon dedicated to youth empowerment and emotional well-being. The program featured keynote speaker Shalini Dayal, LMFT, a Marriage, Family, and Child Therapist, who clearly differentiated between stress, anxiety, and depression while actively engaging the audience. She emphasized the importance of open communication within families to prevent emotional build-up and foster healthier relationships. Guest speaker Dr. Preet Sabharwal, a licensed clinical psychologist, delivered an insightful session on the unique experiences of South Asian youth born and raised in America. He highlighted strategies for balancing dual cultural identities and navigating societal and familial expectations while maintaining emotional health. Throughout the convention, youth speakers courageously addressed key themes, including: · The significance of family support during times of struggle · Breaking stigma and encouraging help-seeking · Relationship dynamics within the Desi community · Coping with academic stress · Navigating breakups and emotional resilience · Seeking support under pressure · The impact of digital media, toxic masculinity, and influencer culture on men’s mental health The convention created a safe and empowering space where young people shared lived experiences and learned practical strategies to enhance their emotional well-being. A central message echoed throughout the event: Youth mental health is not just a personal issue—it is a community responsibility. Maitri was honored to be joined by valued allies Moms Demand Action and the California Women’s Hygiene Initiative, who hosted resource tables and provided attendees with valuable information, support, and community connections. Maitri extends heartfelt gratitude to Emcee Amber Mishra, dedicated volunteers, speakers, youth participants, community allies, and all attendees who made the event impactful and memorable.
