SOUNDBITE (Sinhala) Anura Kumara Dissanayake, President of Sri Lanka: “Look at cyclone Ditwah, which we experienced recently. Thousands of landslides were reported, so many rock falls and soil cracks. The central hills are the main survival factor of our country. Our country is given life by the rivers that flow from the central hills. The rain that the central hill gets, prospers the nation. But we saw in our own lifetime the effects of the destruction that has been caused to our hills. What should be the direction of our rebuilding? What is the use of building a Sri Lanka where all natural resources, environmental structures and animals are destroyed? We expect to restore the environmental structure, vegetation, and wildlife to levels comparable to those around the time of our birth, or even better, for future generations." 8. It comes in the aftermath of the floods and landslides in which more than 800 people were killed or missing. Addressing the country's 78th Independence Day ceremony in the capital Colombo, Dissanayake said the effects of the destruction of the country's central hills were witnessed in Cyclone Ditwah, which struck the country last November. "Our country is given life by the rivers that flow from the central hills... But we saw in our own lifetime the effects of the destruction that ha been caused to our hills," Dissanayake said. He stressed that the reconstruction plan will attempt to curb the effects of climate change, which have worsened Asia cyclones. Sri Lanka became independent from Britain in 1948.
